This role is intended for structural engineers with experience in building systems, steel structures, or solar support structures. This role requires strong experience applying U.S. structural codes, including IBC, ASCE 7, AISC 360, and/or AISI S100.
Position Summary:
The Sr. Structural Systems Engineer is responsible for translating structural system requirements into effective connector solutions and understanding how connector performance influences the structures they join. This is a senior level individual contributor role supporting two business lines: Construction—focused on off‑site and modular building systems—and Energies, including utility‑scale solar PV tracker systems.
The primary objective of the role is to ensure connector designs are grounded in a strong understanding of system behavior, structural demands, and applicable codes and standards. The engineer will support product development and customer integration through rigorous structural analysis, clear engineering rationale, and practical design guidance. The position blends system‑level structural engineering, codes and standards expertise, product development support, and direct customer engagement.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Analyze global load paths and the interaction between connectors and structural systems.
- Evaluate the impact of connector stiffness, preload, slip behavior, tolerances, and joint geometry on overall system performance.
- Define governing load cases and boundary conditions for:
- Off‑site, modular, and industrialized construction systems, including floors, walls, roofs, volumetric modules, and façade attachments
- Utility‑scale and commercial solar PV tracker systems
- Translate field conditions, installation sequences, and applicable structural codes into clear and actionable design inputs for Product Engineering and R&D.
- Identify governing failure modes at the connection and sub‑assembly level, including bearing failure, slip, fatigue, preload loss, and localized yielding.
- Perform structural analysis and connection‑level or sub‑assembly FEA to anticipate potential failure modes prior to physical testing.
- Support the development of validation strategies, test envelopes, and acceptance criteria.
- Provide technical input on fatigue and cyclic loading behavior under wind, seismic, thermal, and operational loading conditions.
- Produce clear, defensible engineering calculations, reports, and justification documents for both internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensure compatibility with applicable codes and standards based on system application, including:
- IBC, ASCE 7, AISC 360, AISI S100; Solar‑ and system‑specific standards such as UL 2703, UL 3703, and ICC‑ES criteria
- Translate code requirements into practical, usable design guidance for product teams and customers.
- Support certification efforts, third‑party engineering reviews, and interactions with approval authorities as required.
- Serve as a technical interface with customers, including:
- Modular builders, general contractors, architects, and developers
- Solar EPCs, tracker manufacturers, and system integrators
- Structural engineers and engineering consultants
- Support design reviews, RFIs, technical proposals, and project‑specific structural inquiries.
- Clearly communicate structural behavior, assumptions, and code compliance to support informed customer decision‑making.
- Assist customers in integrating ARaymond connection solutions efficiently, minimizing redesign cycles.
- Collaborate closely with Product Management, R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, and Business Development teams.
- Contribute to the development of application guidelines, standard details, and typical connection concepts.
- Help strengthen ARaymond’s technical credibility with customers and external partners.
- Other related duties and/or projects as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering.
- Professional Engineer license is a plus, not a requirement.
- Seven to ten or more years of structural engineering experience with demonstrated depth in:
- Steel structure and connection design using bolted and or welded connections
- Code‑based structural engineering
- Meaningful experience in at least one of the following areas:
- Off‑site or modular construction systems
- Utility‑scale solar PV structures or tracker systems
- Structural attachment or facade connection systems
- Experience with structural analysis software such as RISA, SAP2000, ETABS, or STAAD.
- Experience with connection‑level or sub‑assembly finite element analysis.
- Experience with fatigue or lifecycle analysis, preferred.
- Exposure to international structural codes, preferred.
- Familiarity with modular construction or large‑scale solar projects, preferred.
Skills
- Ability to reason from overall system behavior back to connection design requirements.
- Ability to produce engineering documentation that can be reviewed, challenged, and trusted by customers, third‑party engineers, and approval authorities.
- Comfortable engaging at the same technical level as customer structural engineers.
- Able to explain complex structural behavior clearly to technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Practical and evidence‑driven approach that balances structural rigor with manufacturing, cost, and schedule constraints.
- Ability to work closely with others in a collaborative team environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 (Teams, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
- Professional demeanor and ethical conduct, including handling confidential information appropriately.
